Minneapolis labor organizers and democratic socialists discuss debates in the movement and the way forward nationwide

Minneapolis labor organizers and socialists

In January, Minneapolis became the epicenter of resistance to the Trump administration’s campaign of state terror. This administration is testing how far it can go in transforming the DHS into a force for crushing dissent. Following the weeks of resistance to ICE abductions and brutal murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents, the city erupted in a historic wave of mass resistance.

The powerful mass strike on January 23rd — a united call to action by labor, faith, and community leaders — represented a high point of the struggle. This defiance from the Twin Cities has sparked an explosion of national outrage and forced the Trump administration into a partial retreat — even leading the president to publicly question whether his deportation machine can be successfully deployed in other “blue” cities.

While Minneapolis provides an inspiration, the battle is far from over. Over 2,000 agents remain in Minnesota, and the movement faces critical questions about how to sustain and scale up this resistance.

Join Labor Power Publications for a critical discussion on the “Minneapolis Model.” We will move beyond headlines to engage with the complex debates shaping the Minnesota labor movement:

  • The Power of the Strike: How did the January 23rd action change the terrain, and what were its strategic limits?
  • Beyond the Twin Cities: How can we translate mass neighborhood level organizing into a national strategy to protect our neighbors and defeat Trump’s racist agenda?
  • The Path to a General Strike: What would it truly take to organize a coordinated mass strike on a scale capable of kicking ICE out for good?

The discussion will create space for critical engagement with an inspiring yet complicated example of working-class power in the face of Trump’s authoritarian state terror.
